Most Halloween decorating is about objects. The part people remember is the light. A room with the overhead lights off and a dozen flames at different heights looks like Halloween before you have hung a single bat, and it still looks good on November 1.

Why candlelight does most of the work
Flame light is warm, low and slightly moving. The ceiling light is white, flat and comes from above. Switching from one to the other changes how a room feels more than any prop can, which is why a plain table with candles on it reads as Halloween and a table covered in plastic reads as a shop display.
Three rules do most of the work: keep the flames low, vary their height, and group them in odd numbers. Everything below is those three rules applied.
Pick a mood first, then the candle
Choose one scent family per room. Mixed scents compete with each other; a single family reads as a decision. Three that suit October without being pumpkin:
Smoke and embers: the Bonfire Night Candle. Smoky woods and glowing embers, in a blue glass jar. The one for people who say they do not like sweet candles.
Dark wood and spice: the Wood Cardamon Candle. Warm, aromatic wood with a little cardamom spice, in green glass. Warm rather than sweet.
Dark fruit: the Plum Berry Candle. Juicy plum and ripe berry with a hint of soft florals, in warm amber glass. The most autumn of the three.
All three are 8 oz. If one room needs a bigger light source, the 12 oz Cement Pot Candle has three wicks, which puts out more light than one.
Choose holders for height
A table of candles that are all the same height looks flat. Holders fix that, and they are the part that stays in the house after October.
Start with an anchor. The Fiji 3-Piece Black Woven Candle Holder Set with Decorative Tray is black, and the tray turns three holders into one group instead of three separate objects. The Quilted version does the same job with a different texture.
Then vary the height. The Adele Curvy Tall Ceramic Candle Holders rise above the table; the Elise Petite Ceramic Candle Holders stay low. Each comes as a pair.
Add one contrast. The Aspen White Four Pillar Candle Holder is off-white, and next to black it looks sharper than either does alone. For a woodland note, the Set of 2 Botanical Candlesticks are tree-branch-inspired ceramic.
A Halloween table in three steps
1. Keep it low. Nothing above eye level when everyone is seated. People should be able to see each other across the table. This is also why candles beat a tall centerpiece.
2. Group in threes. Put the Fiji set, tray and all, down the middle. Add the Elise pair at one end and a single Aspen holder at the other. Odd numbers look composed; pairs look like something is missing.
3. Light them last. Turn the overhead lights off or down, then light the candles just before anyone sits. The room changes at once, and it is the only part of the evening that takes thirty seconds.
To build exactly this: the Fiji Black Woven set, the Elise Petite pair, a Bonfire Night candle and a Wood Cardamon candle come to $139.96 at current prices, or $104.96 with HALLOWEEN25.
Beyond the table
Mantel. Three flames of different heights, the tallest in the middle. Leave the rest of the mantel empty.
Entryway. One candle where people arrive says more than five scattered through the house. The Lya 12" Crystal Glass Candle Lamp holds tea lights, short taper or votive candles under a glass shade, so it suits a hall table where a bare flame would be in the way.
Windowsill. Low holders only. A flame at a window is seen from outside as well, which is most of the point.
Burn them safely
Never leave a lit candle unattended or go to sleep with one burning. Keep flames away from curtains, paper and decorations, and out of reach of children and pets. Set candles on a stable, heat-safe surface, trim the wick before each burn, and put them out before they reach the bottom of the container. Keep a fire extinguisher or a bowl of water within reach when you have several lit.
It does not end on November 1
None of this is a costume. Blue, green and amber glass and black holders sit just as well on a Thanksgiving table, and the same rules apply: low, varied, odd numbers. More in our holiday table centerpiece ideas.
Questions we get asked
How do I make Halloween decor look elegant instead of themed?
Use light and colour, not characters. Candles at different heights, dark glass and black holders do it without a single skull.
How many candles should I put on a table?
Enough to light faces without glare: for most tables, five to nine flames in groups of three, kept below eye level.
Does the 25% off apply to candle sets and holder sets?
Yes. It applies to everything in the candles and candle holders collections, including the Fiji sets. Enter HALLOWEEN25 at checkout. It ends at 11:59 pm Pacific on Sunday, November 1.
Will these still be useful after Halloween?
Yes. Every piece above works for autumn and winter tables, which is why we picked them.
